No. The Digitest 3 should not be used on a patient or by an operator who has implanted medical devices, such as pacemakers, defibrillators, or insulin pumps. It may interfere with these devices and cause harm.
The Digitest 3 cannot be used in the presence of flammable or explosive gases. The use of dental nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia is not advisable because you would not get an accurate response. To accurately diagnose the condition of the tooth, pulp testing must be performed on a patient who has not received local anesthesia or gas analgesia.
The use of accessories other than those specified, or provided by Parkell Europe will result in improper operation. Do not use.
The battery is low and needs to be replaced. Replace it as explained in the section “Installing/Replacing" the Battery. Battery should be removed if unit is to be stored unused for more than 30 days.
It may be tightened by carefully inserting a flat screwdriver blade into the split metal base of the probe and gently expanding the sides apart with a twist of the tool. This adjustment method is outlined in the official Digitest 3 IFU.
No. Discard and replace any tooth probe if the metal or the insulation becomes damaged during use. You can purchase a new probe from our official accessories here.
Parkell's Digitest 3 is to be used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests such as x rays, temperature tests, percussion etc. in order to confirm tooth vitality.
No. Studies indicate cold testing prior to electric pulp testing does not impact the results of the electric pulp test.
The tooth probes, ground clip and wire assembly may be sterilized in any conventional steam autoclave. Comply with manufacturers recommended procedures.
NO. Autoclaving the Digitest 3 power unit will damage it.
Not necessarily. Each patient will have their own base level to electrical stimulus that must be determined at the time of testing. The base level for each patient can be determined by pulp testing similar teeth to the teeth in question. To confirm the diagnosis, a corresponding control tooth in the same arch should be tested. Molars should be matched to molars, premolars to premolars, cuspids to cuspids, and incisors to incisors. If this is not possible because teeth are absent, endodontically treated, have full coverage or very large restorations a similar tooth in the opposite arch should be used.
Explain to the patient that they are in control of the test and can stop it at any time. In most instances, the first sensation patients notice is a tingling feeling. When the patient feels a change in the tooth (tingling, pulsing, buzzing or slight discomfort) all they need to do is let go of the metal ground clip and the test will be over. This should minimize the potential for patient discomfort.

The procedure below has been validated according to EN ISO 15883:
Use enzymatic or low alkaline, suited for medical devices, non-corrosive, neutral cleaning agent with minimal foaming characteristics, suited for medical devices.
Use drinking water quality for cleaning and deionized or purified water for final rinse/disinfection.
Load the instruments in an open position in the washer-disinfector. Use a suitable instrument tray.
Pre-wash in cold water, 2 x 2 min
Main wash with detergent at minimum 55°C, 10 min
Rinse in warm water, 2x 1 min.
Final rinse/disinfection in distilled or de-mineralized water at 90°C, minimum 1 min.
Drying at 110° C, minimum 15 min.
The Digitest 3 power unit should not be reprocessed in a washer disinfector. Since, this will cause damage to it. Also, the Digitest 3 incorporates sophisticated electronic circuitry, it should not be directly sprayed with or soaked in disinfectant.
If a Tooth Probe becomes loose in the mount of the Power Unit, it may be tightened by carefully inserting a flat screwdriver blade into the split metal base of the probe and gently expanding the sides apart with a twist of the tool. Discard and replace any Tooth Probe if the metal or the insulation becomes damaged during use. This adjustment method is outlined in the official Digitest 3 IFU.
If the Digitest 3 does not deliver any power, it could be due to one of the following reasons:
Starting the device – To turn on the unit, press the power button to select the desired speed. Then press and hold the power button during the whole test. Releasing the power button will interrupt the power discharge.
Battery issues – Ensure the battery is fully charged and properly installed. Replace it if depleted.
Probe or lead connections – Check that probe and lead wire are securely connected. Loose or damaged connections can prevent the unit from functioning.
Device malfunction – If the batteries and connections are correct but the unit still does not discharge, there may be an internal fault. Contact Parkell technical support service or an authorized service provider for inspection or repair.
To preserve the Digitest screen from becoming opaque you should avoid wiping with high-alcohol solutions. The device should be disinfected by wiping it with a lint-free towel moistened with an EPA-approved disinfectant containing not more than 30% alcohol, alcohol-free surface disinfectant wipes or disinfecting wipes containing 3-5% hydrogen peroxide.
An opaque or cloudy screen usually indicates moisture, residue, or screen degradation. Here’s what you can do:
Moisture inside the device – If exposed to humidity or condensation, the screen can appear cloudy. Power off the device and let it air dry in a warm, dry area for 24–48 hours. Avoid using direct heat like hairdryers.
Chemical residue from cleaning – If a disinfectant or cleaning solution was used, residue may remain on the screen. Wipe gently with a soft, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water. Do not use high alcohol solutions as they will corrode the display and cause opacity. If the lens becomes hazy or scratched, NOVUS No. 2- Fine Scratch Remover or Polywatch lens polishing cream can be used to remove the damage
Check batteries and connections – Ensure batteries are charged and probes are properly connected, as poor connections can sometimes affect the display.
No, this is not normal. Under standard use, the batteries in Digitest 3 should last for several weeks to months, depending on the frequency of testing. The replacement battery may be a Duracell ® MN1604, Panasonic ® 6AM6 or equivalent. Although rechargeable 9-Volt batteries may be utilized, they will require more frequent charging because of the considerable voltage required to perform the pulp vitality testing procedure.
