Three Decades of Consistent Bite Registration: How Blu Mousse Remains Relevant in Digital Dentistry

In a time when dental materials change quickly, products from the 1980s usually don’t stay relevant for long. However, Blu-Mousse, a bite registration material introduced by Parkell in 1987, has been used consistently for more than three decades. Its continued use, even in fully digital practices, shows its practical value in solving a key clinical challenge: capturing precise interocclusal records with minimal occlusal displacement.
Dr. Frank R. Friedman adopted Blu-Mousse in the early 1990s and has used it continuously since. “I had been practicing for over 20 years, taking impressions and bite registrations with traditional materials, and they worked just fine,” Dr. Friedman recalled. “Then, in the early 1990s, Dr. Jeff Hoos developed the hydraulic and hydrophobic (H&H) technique, which is recommended for capturing crown preparation margins without gingival retraction.”
The Material Properties Question

Blu-Mousse is designed to allow patients to close naturally with zero resistance while capturing occlusal detail. It does not distort between the time the bite is taken and when the lab articulates the models. Blu-Mousse has a stackable consistency. It stays in place on the occlusal surface without slumping, while still allowing the patient to close naturally. “All set times offer light, fluffy consistency so patients can bite down without resistance, which helps to ensure accuracy of the bite registration index“.
Blu-Mousse cures to a final durometer of 90, described as a ‘plaster-like consistency.’ This firmness resists breakage during removal from the mouth, trimming of excess flash, and positioning of models during articulation

Working Time as Clinical Variable
Blu-Mousse is available in three set times: 30 seconds (Super-Fast), 60 seconds, and 2 minutes (Classic). All three variants cure to the same final durometer.

“I use the Super-Fast Blu-Mousse most frequently,” Dr. Friedman noted. “It reduces the time to take impressions, and its accuracy is superior to other products. I’ve never had tight castings or other significant problems. I typically use this product 6 to 7 times a day.“
Beyond Bite Registration
Dr. Friedman has extended the Blu-Mousse’s use beyond its primary indication. “In addition to using Blu-Mousse as a bite registration material, I also use it as a kind of index for my lab to use when I retrofit a partial to a crown,” he said. “It also serves as a trusted checkbite when I question the patient’s articulation when using a triple tray. I just take a quick bite registration for verification.”
Beyond bite registration, Blu-Mousse can also be used for additional applications: as a matrix for fabricating direct and indirect provisionals (when used in combination with Mach® Die Silicone), and as a rigid base when creating study models or whitening trays.

Scannable in Digital Workflows
A material introduced in 1987 predates intraoral scanning and digital dentistry by decades. However, Blu-Mousse is scannable using contemporary digital technologies. This compatibility allows practices transitioning to digital workflows to maintain familiar bite registration protocols while integrating new impression methods.
Blu Mousse comes in 50 ml split cartridges for automix delivery and is available in peppermint or unscented formulations. Kits include two cartridges (100 ml total) and mixing tips.
The Longevity Question
Dr. Friedman’s experience with Blu-Mousse spans more than 25 years of continuous clinical use. “It’s increased the speed at which I do a crown and improved accuracy, which is critical in a high-volume practice like mine,” he stated. “And patients never complain about the taste or the experience.”
He has recommended the Blu-Mousse to colleagues, including family members in the profession: “Over the years, I’ve shared my experience with Blu-Mousse with other colleagues, most notably my brother-in-law who also is a dentist. He’s been using it almost as long as I have!.”
Parkell Europe also offers Green-Mousse, a variant with greater flexibility (60 durometer) and a 2-minute set time, for cases requiring a softer final set, ideal to allow easier removal in areas with significant undercuts, periodontal issues, or to avoid locking onto teeth.
