An Interview with Dr. Simona Giani on Dryz Blu

How can dental professionals achieve clean, precise impressions without the frustration of bleeding or the need for repeat appointments? In dentistry, achieving accurate impressions while maintaining tissue health and visibility can be a challenge.
Dryz Blu, a bright blue astringent gingival retraction paste, offers a reliable and fast solution for both digital and traditional impressions. Also, it is compatible with the most popular retraction techniques including compression caps, retraction cord, electrosurgery and laser.
To give dental professionals a closer look at how this innovative product is used in real clinical settings. We sat down with Dr. Simona Giani, a respected international speaker and practitioner.

Below is the detailed conversation with Dr. Giani. Wherein, she shares her workflow, tips, and insights on how Dryz Blue helps in achieving clean, precise, and blood-free impressions every time.
Q1: Dr. Giani, could you introduce us to Dryz Blu? What makes it stand out?
Dryz Blu is a highly visible, blue-colored, astringent gingival retraction paste. It helps create a well-defined, non-bleeding gingival margin, which is essential for accurate and predictable results. And it’s really easy to place and to remove, leaving no residues.
Q2: When do you find Dryz Blu most useful in your clinical routine?
I use Dryz Blu in different clinical situations —for taking impressions of prosthetic elements and inlays, and before placing the rubber dam. Especially when there are subgingival carious lesions or deep preparations, and I want to avoid bleeding. I use Dryz Blu for both digital and traditional impression taking. It’s helpful during crown placement and provisional crown placement. When revising an abutment or preparation, some bleeding may occur. In such cases, applying Dryz Blu is essential because it allows me to take impressions without needing a second appointment with the patient.
Q3: What do you personally like most about working with Dryz Blu?
I really like the creamy but firm texture. It applies easily, stays in place, retracts the gingiva well, and controls bleeding effectively. The active ingredient Aluminium Chloride (23%) acts quickly and does not slough or discolor tissue like ferric sulfates. It also rinses off very easily. The bright blue color helps me visually confirm that the paste has been completely removed and there are no risks of necrosis. The proper removal of any paste residue is very important for both digital and conventional impressions.
Q4: Can you walk us through how you use Dryz Blu in practice?
I apply Dryz Blu after placing a double or triple zero retraction cord, with or without a cotton compression cap. After that, I rinse carefully and immediately take the digital impression, starting from the area of the prepared tooth. In other cases, I apply Dryz Blu, starting the intraoral scan while I wait for it to act. I remove the paste and the gingival margin from the image. Further, rinse thoroughly and then resume the high-definition scanning of the preparation area.

Q5: For clinicians new to Dryz Blu, what are the key steps for using it effectively?
Dryz Blu has been designed with ease and efficiency in mind. By making it straightforward for clinicians to incorporate into their routine. It’s very simple to use and below are the steps that should be followed.
- Apply and leave Dryz Blu on for 2 minutes
- After 2 mins, rinse well with water
- Dry with compressed air
That’s all it takes to achieve clean, accurate impressions with minimal effort.
Q6: Do you use Dryz Blu in syringes or unidose capsules?
I personally always have both in my dental office. I choose capsules if I am only treating two or three teeth. But I prefer syringes if I am treating a larger area. If the syringe is being used on multiple patients, we both use a protection sleeve. And then wipe it clean with disinfection wipes between patients.
Conclusion

“Dryz Blu is a highly visible blue gingival retraction astringent paste. I use it for impression taking for prosthetic elements and inlays and before fitting the rubber dam. For example when I have gingival carious lesions and I want to avoid bleeding in the sulcus. I like Dryz Blu’s creamy but ‘firm’ consistency, I like that it applies easily and stays where I place it. It retracts the gum well and stops bleeding effectively. Another important aspect is that it rinses off easily and its characteristic blue colour allows me to check that all material is rinsed off correctly, which is important for both optical and analogue impressions.”
